2012 Honda Insight Overview
For those looking to save money in the showroom and at the pump, the 2012 Honda Insight with its over 40 combined mpg and a base price starting under $20,000 represents what is most likely the best automotive bargain on the market today.
There are a few changes to the Insight’s exterior for 2012. The front of the car was reworked with a new grille that features blue accents that are popular with hybrid models of late, updated headlights, and a new bumper. 15-inch wheels, additional blue tint on the headlights, LED brake lights, and a rear-window wiper are all standard.
If you're feeling the need-for-speed, then it’s probably best to look elsewhere. Impetus for the 2012 Insight comes from a familiar hybrid gas-electric system that features a 1.3-liter four-cylinder gas engine mated to a CVT and an electric motor which combine to output 98-horsepower.
This won’t smoke the tires, but it does help the Insight to achieve very high fuel economy numbers of 41 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. Unlike the hybrid systems in some cars on the road today, the Insight’s engine never completely shuts off so you won’t be able to sneak up on your friends. The 2012 Insight does however come with plenty of technology that increases its efficiency, starting with that big, green “Econ” button you find on the left side of the steering wheel. Pressing that button moves the Insight into Econ mode, which modulates throttle response and adjusts power/torque to maximize your mpg.
2012 also brought a few welcome changes to the Insight’s interior. The backseat now has more head and leg room which should keep your passengers happy, as will the lower window sills which improve visibility and additional sound insulation. The Insight’s wedge-like hatchback shape also gives it plenty of cargo room, 15.9 cubic feet, or if you need more space 60/40 split folding rear seats come standard. Further standard features include automatic climate control, auxiliary audio input, and power windows and locks with remote entry. Bluetooth® connectivity, USB/iPod interface, and a navigation system are also available as options.
The Insight also comes with a litany of standard safety features including six airbags, active front head restraints, antilock brakes, vehicle stability assist (read: electronic stability control) with traction control, and LATCH child seating in the rear.
So go green while saving yourself some green with the 2012 Honda Insight.

Most tanks I average 48mpg. I love the back up camera. I love that my smart phone is totally connected by blue tooth and it plays my music via blue tooth too. I love the traffic is shown on navigation map now... has saved me time and gas from not sitting in traffic. It's a great car and has the reliability of a Honda!!! Can't go wrong!

I was very skeptical, but I am honestly averaging 51 MPGs on both city and highway. I commute over 38 miles one way and I gladly gave up the comfort of my Volvo S40 for the Honda Insight. Getting twice the mileage is worth losing my "Man Card" at the dealership. It is less Hybridish than the Toyota Prius and not at all what I had expected. I have been in the Army over 16 years and never thought I would lose power over mpg's....but I am a true believer after saving over $125 this month !! Do yourself a favor and just test drive one, before gas gets to $5 a gallon.
